Overcoming panic attacks can be difficult if you're not familiar with them or if you've had them only a handful of times. Anyone who has had a panic or anxiety attack will tell you that it can be absolutely terrifying. When someone suffers an attack for the first they usually think that they are having a heart attack and often believe that they're going to die. To overcome panic attacks quickly you first need to have a better understanding of them and their symptoms.
Panic or anxiety attacks are experienced by those with panic disorder. These individuals experience a sudden attack of nervousness and fear often times without reason or warning. Some of the symptoms of panic or anxiety attacks are: cold sweats, tightening of the chest, difficulty breathing, shaking, nausea, fainting and an irrational feeling of terror.
Myself and others have had a lot of success overcoming panic attacks by following these 3 easy steps -
Step #1 - Breathe
When experiencing an attack the first thing you should do is focus on controlling your breathing. The psychical symptoms of an attack can be controlled by taking long, deep, complete breathes. These deep breathes work to relax the body and they help to prevent the sufferer from fainting.
Step #2 - Use positive self talk
Most people suffering from an attack think the same negative thoughts over and over in their mind which makes their symptoms worse. It's known that our minds can only hold either positive or negative thoughts at any single time. Switching from a negative thought pattern to a positive one plays a crucial part in overcoming panic attacks. The easiest way to do this is to use positive self talk such as, "it's just a panic attack I know that everything is going to be okay". Self talk such as this repeated over and over will help you overcome panic attacks quickly.
Step #3 - Try to identify the cause of the attack
After the psychical symptoms of an attack have subsided you should really try to identify the cause of the attack. If you're able to identify some of the anxieties that contributed to the attack and address them you will significantly decrease your chances of suffering another attack.
Now you know how to overcome panic attacks. At the onset of the attack you should first work to control your breathing. The next step is to use positive self talk to further calm yourself down and once the attack is over you can identify what triggered it and begin to work through it.
These 3 steps have helped me overcome panic attacks and I'm sure they will work well for you too. But to be perfectly honest with you, I haven't need to use them since I started to doing this one simple thing.
